Independent and locally governed
Sets its own bylaws
Greater flexibility and autonomy
Focused on the local school community
We chose to operate as a Parent Teacher Organization rather than a PTA because we value the flexibility and independence that come with being locally governed. By forming a PTO, we can set our own bylaws, keep all of our fundraising dollars within our school community, and make decisions that directly reflect the needs and priorities of our students, families, and staff. This structure allows us to be nimble, responsive, and fully focused on strengthening our own school without the administrative requirements or dues associated with a national organization.
Affiliated with National and State PTA (dues paid upward)
Must follow national bylaws
Provides access to statewide training and advocacy resources
Part of national advocacy network
At this time, we’re very comfortable operating as a PTO, but we’re not entirely closing the door on the idea of becoming a PTA in the future. If our school community ever feels that the structure, advocacy network, or statewide resources of the PTA would better serve our goals, we would be open to exploring that option. For now, our focus remains on what works best for our families and staff—staying flexible, independent, and responsive to our school’s unique needs.
